. IELTS PREPARATION

Introduction to the IELTS test

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a test of English language proficiency, developed by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate. It is primarily designed to assess the ability and preparedness of candidates who wish to study further or higher education courses abroad or Skilled professionals such as Doctors & Nurses, applying for licenses for employment in foreign countries such as USA, Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand.

The test is owned by three organizations – The British Council, IDP Australia and University of Cambridge ESOLwho are empowered to protect the validity of the test.

IELTS is not a test that you can pass or fail. Your assessment will be reported according to a scale from bands one to nine. You will need to contact the university you wish to enter to find out the IELTS score they require for entry into your chosen course. Band one indicates that you have virtually no English at all. Band nine is native speaker proficiency. Universities in Australia typically require a band score of between 6 and 7.

The test questions and tasks have been designed to reflect the general interests of people from an educated background. You will therefore not be required to have any specialist knowledge.

The test has four components – Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking. You will receive a band score for each component as well as a global band score.

It consists of two categories Academic & General. The Academic Test is taken for entry into Under Graduate & Post Graduate studies or professional studies. The General Test is taken for vocational or training programs not at degree level, for admission to Secondary schools and for Immigration purposes.

IELTS- Listening Module

There are four sections in the listening test. Each section has 10 questions, making a total of 40 questions.The sections become Progressive Harder.The answers to the questions come in the same order as the information on the recording.

Section 1 (3-4 minutes)
A conversation between two speakers on an everyday, social topic.

Section 2 (3-4 minutes)
A talk by one speaker on a general topic.

Section3 (3-4 minutes)
A discussion between two or four speakers on a topic related to education.

Section4 (3-4 minutes)
A lecture or a talk by one speaker.
pic3 SUCCESS TIP :

Spelling should be correct and handwriting must be clear. Both British and American spellings are acceptable e.g. colour/color.

There is one mark per question and this makes a total of 40 marks. Your mark are converted into a band score of between 1 and 9. You can get half bands in the listening test, e.g. 6.5.

IELTS- Reading Module

There are three sections in the reading test. Each section has 13-14 questions, making a total of 40. The sections become Progressive harder. The whole test lasts an hour and altogether, you have to read a maximum of 2350 words. Academic module has longer text as compare to general training module.

Section 1
Up to three short passages related to everyday life..

Section 2
Two passages related to education and training or work.

Section3 (3-4 minutes)
One long passage on a topic of general interest e.g. newspaper texts.
pic3 SUCCESS TIP :

There are two main techniques that people use to read and answer. It’s not a question of using one or the other but you will need both methods in doing the test. Let’s have a look at the two techniques in turn.

Skimming:

Skimming is reading fast to get the “gist” or the general idea of the text. There are different techniques of doing skimming. You can run your eyes over the text getting the general meaning, not stopping at words that you don’t understand as this will slow you down. The important thing with skimming is speed. Another way to skim is to just read the first and last paragraphs of a text and summaries as well. You could also just read the title, subtitles and illustrations if there are any. I prefer for IELTS the first way – reading it all quickly to get the general meaning, but of course it depends on your reading speed. If you are a slow reader in English you really need to practise to improve. You don’t need IELTS specific texts for this. A good English newspaper is fine. Get one every day and read the articles as quickly as you can. Do this with as many articles as possible every day and your speed will quickly improve.

Scanning:

This is another very important technique for the IELTS Reading Tests. This is the technique that you use when you are reading a telephone book or a dictionary. You are not starting at the top and reading every line back and forth as you would read a novel. You are moving your eyes around the text, back and across and up and down. You are searching for some specific information: a word or name. This is an important technique in IELTS reading as you are often searching for some specific information. You read the question and then you search for key words or ideas associated with the question. This is a bit more difficult to practise than skimming. You get long texts (from newspapers, magazines or other sources) and get a friend to read it and then ask you to find key ideas or words as quickly as possible. Again, if you do this frequently, your speed will quickly improve.

IELTS- Writing Module

There are two tasks in the writing test. Task2 is worth more marks than Task1.It is your job to manage timing the test yourself.

Academic Module

Task 1 (20 minutes) – 150 words

You are given a ‘Visual Representation’ of some information. This could be given in a number of formats like

You are asked to write some form of report using the information given.

Task 2 (40 minutes) – 250 words
You have to write an essay of 250 words that expresses your opinion on a issue, or shows how to solve a problem, or requires you to speculate about future trends.

General Training Module

Task 1 (20 minutes)
You have to write a 150 word letter according to the instructions given to you..

Task 2 (40 minutes)
You have to write an essay of 250 words in response to a question or argument on a general topic.

Establish your ability to answer questions where facts and figures are not given and where your opinions, thoughts, and views need to be expressed.

IELTS- Speaking Module

The test is 11-14 minutes long and involves you speaking to a native English speaker who is trained to assess your spoken English against IELTS criteria. The test is also recorded. There are three stages to the test:

Part 1 (4-5 minutes)
You answer short questions from the examiner about yourself and everyday situation. Or you will be asked to talk about your personal situation (family, job, university study, etc.)

Part 2 (3-4 minutes)
The examiner will give you a card with a topic on it and you must talk for between one and two minutes based on your own experience. The examiner will give you a pencil and a piece of paper and allow you one minute to write notes in preparation for your presentation.

Part 3 (4-5minutes)
You discuss some general but more abstract topics with the examiner that are related to the Part 2 talk. Part Three of the speaking test is the most important part because it is in this part of the test the examiner establishes your final speaking score.

Make sure you speak clearly and answer only the questions that you are asked.
The examiner will know if you have memorized answers and you will loose marks for this.

STUDENT VISA REQUIREMENTS:



Undergraduate (Bachelor Level)

The two main points (besides English Language requirements) to be considered before applying to any course in a university:

1. Australian Year 12 Qualification and Equivalents
(12 years of schooling)

The Australian education system is based upon 13 years of school level education (i.e. primary plus secondary). Each state in Australia has its own secondary school certificate. While these certificates have different names, they all require an equivalent standard of education and can be referred to generally as Australian Year 12 qualifications. All Australian universities recognize the various Year 12 qualifications from different states. The universities also recognize a wide range of secondary school certificates from other countries as being equivalent to the Australian Year 12 qualifications. Specifically, successful completion of class 10+2 from India.

2. Pre-requisite Subjects

Some courses specify ‘pre-requisite subjects’. This means that students must have passed this subject as part of their entry qualification; this is because the first year subjects of the course assume that students have a good basic knowledge of this subject at Australian Year 12 level. Pre-requisite subjects vary from course to course. For instance, a Bachelor of Arts degree might have no pre-requisite; a Bachelor of Commerce might require general Mathematics and Bachelor of Engineering may require advanced Mathematics/Calculus. Some courses, especially in art and design, also require students to submit folios of their work with their applications.

Post Graduate (Master’s & Doctorate level)

Masters degree and Graduate diploma: Most Australian universities accept the Indian graduation system of three years for entry into postgraduate courses. However, entry to postgraduate programs is competitive and often complex. For most Universities, a good first degree from a leading university in India or its equivalent is essential.

PhD and Postgraduate diploma: For Postgraduate diploma, the student should have a recognized master degree in an appropriate field. For PhD, though each application is assessed on individual basis, a good master degree is essential.



HEALTHCARE REQUIREMENTS:

It is a requirement of the Australian Government that international students register for the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) before coming to Australia.

OSHC helps pay for medical and hospital care you may need while in Australia. The OSHC rates for a 12-month stay are $ 274 for a single premium and $ 548 for a family premium.OSHC is available from Medibank Private, Australia’s largest private health insurer, Medibank Private has many business service centres around Australia, which provide fast and convenient service.

REQUIREMENTS FOR WORKING:

International students at the higher education level can work on a casual basis (upto 20 hours a week) during course time and full time during vacation periods, provided this does not interfere with their study program.

Universities and TAFE institutions have a Careers Office, which regularly posts employment vacancies.

Before gaining paid part-time employment, you must lodge an application for a ‘student visa with permission to work’ with the Department of Immigration, Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA). You can only do this once you have started your course in Australia.

About Canada

Canada is bordered by three oceans – the Arctic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. The Great Lakes, shared by the United States and Canada, consist of one fifth of the world’s fresh surface water! Canada is 9,984,670 km². That’s almost the same size as the whole of the continent of Europe and about a third the size of Africa. You could fit the United Kingdom into Canada almost 40 times! Approximately 85% of Canadians live within 300 km of the US border! There are six times zones in Canada! Lake Superior is so large that it has its own tide! The lake rises and falls a few centimetres due to the gravitational pull of the moon. Waves obscure the tide so much that it is difficult to measure! There are many climatic variations in Canada, ranging from the permanently frozen ice caps north of the 70th parallel to the lush vegetation of British Columbia’s west coast. Daytime summer temperatures can rise to 35°C and higher, while lows of -15°C are not uncommon in winter. More moderate temperatures are the norm in spring and fall. Over the years, Canadians have adapted extremely well to the colder periods of weather by installing heat in housing and cars, by having heated public transportation systems, and in some instances – in walkways to and from buildings in schools.

Educational System

In Canada, education is regulated by each separate provincial government through the individual ministries of education. The ministries of education oversees smaller bodies called boards of education or district school boards (such as the Toronto District School Board) which oversee the individual schools. There are 10 provinces and three territories, each with their own way of organizing education, but there are some generalizations that one can make about Canadian education. Most children attend publicly-funded schools which are run by the ministries, though some children do attend private schools. These private schools are run by independent operators who must conform to government guidelines regarding education. There are some children who are taught at home by their parents or tutors. These children are said to be “home schooled”. Which school children attend most often depends on where they live. In the public school system, a certain school services a certain region; all the children who live within that region will attend that school. In some provinces, students from outside a school’s region may apply to go to school there. This generally happens when a school has a reputation for excelling in a certain academic area. Students attending a private school may come from many different areas. The schools may have dormitories for out-of-town and overseas students to live in. The Canadian system of schooling requires 12 years of education before a ‘High School Diploma’ is awarded. After this, students have the option of joining a two year ‘Associate’ degree or a 4-year full Bachelor’s Degree.

If you have a student permit, you may be granted a work permit or a variation of your student permit to allow you to gain practical experience on completion of a three-year course, or over the summer vacation
