School Introduction Okanagan College is a public, post-secondary institution with campuses in four regional cities. The largest city, Kelowna (pop. 100, 000) is located less than one hour east of Vancouver by air. The region is famous for its beautiful mountain and lake scenery; moderate winters; hot, dry summers; delicious fruit and wine and many recreational opportunites (e.g. golf, skiing snowboarding, mountain biking.)
The College offers a variety of degree, diploma, certificate and English as a Second Language programs ranging from one month to four years in duration. The total student population of approximately 5, 000 includes over 300 international students from throughout the world.
ESL Program Introduction
Okanagan College offers effective and unique ESL programs at the College campuses located in the cities of Kelowna, Salmon Arm and Vernon, British Columbia.
In Kelowna, the ESL Academic Preparation Certificate program includes six levels from Beginner to Advanced. All new students take the English Language Assessment Test when they arrive to determine their appropriate level. Each level takes one four-month semester to complete and covers reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Students at Level Four and higher may combine ESL and academic courses. No TOEFL or other English test score is required for admission although applicants should have studied English previously.
The Professional and Academic ESL program (Salmon Arm) and Intensive ESL Immersion program (Vernon) are designed to improve their English grammar, pronunciation, speaking and writing ability through a series of four-week sessions. In Salmon Arm, TOEFL and TOEIC preparation courses are also offered. Students may take any number of sessions which commence at the beginning of each month.
